The mysteries of the Hidden race revealed!
The idea for The Chosen Chronicles came from a dream that just stuck with me. In the dream I was watching this really, I mean really, old man sit in a dirty old chair and stare into a crumbling fireplace. That’s all. That was the whole dream. But in the dream, I could sense so powerfully that this man was extremely important. He had a secret. A secret he was bound to protect, but his time was short, and something was about to happen because of his secret that would change everything about the world I thought I knew.
When I woke up the ideas started. What if all myth and legend throughout the world had a basis in fact? Nearly every part of the world has similar myths, what if they are all based on one race? A race that has been hiding since the beginning of time. A race whose antics are so unbelievable they’re retold as myth or legend.
The ideas snowballed from there and the world of the Hidden was created.
It has taken nearly ten years of studying everything from worldwide myths and legends, Native American languages, Einstein theory, dimensional theory, quantum mechanics, and then taking several writing courses, classes, and conferences geared toward science fiction and fantasy writers, to bring these ideas into a novel series.
I heard once that “myths rely on truth for their power”; The Chosen Chronicles and the world of the Hidden is my story of what the “truth” could be. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Below are images of some of the creatures and races of people I created for for The Chosen Chronicles. Some of the images I drew myself, the others were drawn by Lisa Anderson. Feel free to “pin” the images, but please respect copyright and give credit where it’s due. All images by LISA require her written permission to reuse. She can be reached here.
Watchers are a bold, powerful, brilliant race. Guardians of the Radia Shards, they are considered the wisest of all Hidden-kind. Before the Revolution, they lived in colonies and peoples would come from all over the world seeking their advice and counsel. As a person would give their trust to a Watcher, the Watcher could sense his/her thoughts—past, present, and future—and help that person with their desire. It was a Radia gift and one meant only to be used for the purpose of Light. They strategized with army leaders, comforted and advised clan leaders, and sat in counsel with the Guardians of Light—the highest leaders in Hidden realm. After the Revolution, when hope for human-kind was bleak, their Radia shards split and led the Watchers to human children that they would train and teach to become guardians for the ignorant human race, until such time that the Ninth arrived and the Final Battle between good and evil would take place.
The Chosen are human children selected by the Light to protect humans after they severed their ties with the Hidden race. The human death toll of the Radia Revolution was so great; humans no longer trusted the Hidden and began to shun them. The Guardians did not want to leave the humans unprotected. They understood that as the Hidden slowly faded in the memories of humans, as their races no longer intermarried, the Balance would shift, creatures of darkness would be able to shield themselves from human sight, and eventually their knowledge of the Dark would to turn into myth. The humans would be left alone, not understanding the evils they could feel but no longer see. The Guardians prayed to Light for help.
One day the Watchers showed up with an incredible story. Their Radia shards had split, and they could see that the other half was leading them to human children, children who once they held the shards were given one Hidden gift. The Watchers knew they were to find and train the children. The shards also allowed Chosen to see the creatures of the Dark-so long as they kept the shard around their neck. The shards also kept Watcher and Chosen ward linked. The Watcher could sense so closely the thoughts and future actions of their Chosen it was almost as if they could read their minds and foretell their futures. The bond between Watcher and Chosen is nearly unbreakable.
The ability to bend the elements to the will of the master has been the quest of human kind forever. The Chosen children each have a gift to manipulate certain things pertaining to the world around them. Whether it is the silent ability to blend or disappear into their surroundings, or enter the minds of animals in order to elicit their help, or the more blatant gift of creating fire in their hands, each Chosen has a responsibility to use their gifts to protect mankind from the evils of the Dark.

Raksasha are blood trackers. Their sole purpose is to hunt and kill the Chosen ones. The idea for the Raksasha was slightly inspired by the Navajo Skinwalker stories. I really enjoy Native American mythology. This site had some great information on Native American myths as well as many other myths throughout the world.
The Doogar inspired the dwarf legends. They are small, round, and bow-legged. The old men usually have extremely long beards that trail the ground. They live a very long time, like most in the Hidden race, and generally don’t begin to show any signs of age until they are around eighty earth years old. They prefer living below ground. The wide openness of the world above is overwhelming to them. They have excellent eyesight at night and are very skilled builders. Their superior skill in metal and wood workmanship has often made them targets for slave kidnappings by the Dark. Télora, the ability to manipulate the earth beneath their feet, is a common gift among the Doogar and would explain, in part, the beauty and functionality of their caves.
Giant demonic wolves. The wolf has long been a story of legend. Whether you refer to werewolves or just the mysterious nature of the wolf itself, the wolf is a creature found in both fairytales and horror stories. The DéHool’s main purpose is to find and destroy Watchers.
THE RADIA WARRIORS: Tolkien has had a big influence on me here. These warriors in my head look like strong Native American warriors, and carry the archery skills of Legolas and the sword-wielding ability of Aragorn.
LAFAR (Light Elves):
The Lafar are a beautiful quiet people. They are skilled hunters and loving caretakers of the earth and its creatures. The most common gift among Lafar is Lóklana—light givers, but there are also many Lafar with the Animashta gift. Lafar serve the Light with beauty and devotion. They are extremely wise and perceptive—usually the first of the Hidden kind to know when the Dark is plotting. After the Radia Revolution, when many of their race turned to the side of the Dark, the Lafar secluded themselves even more as trust became an issue. There are few left.
DAKLAFAR (Dark Elves):
The Daklafar were once Lafar until their greed and arrogance led them to seek out the Dark. Believing they were better and more important than other Hidden because of their Lóklana gifts, they sought power and dominance. They sided with Darsapean, leader of the Dark. But, they did not get what they had hoped. They became as hideous as they were once beautiful, and rather than power and dominance, they became slaves to the Dark and the will of Darsapean.
Ookra are minions of the Dark. Short, odd looking creatures with long bat-like ears that have lots of black hair sticking out. Wrinkled, leathery, pale skin, and solid black eyes. Overly long fingers that end in pointed claws. Tufts of gray hair poke out of their wrinkled heads. They wear long dark cloaks and enjoy plates of Junga worms for meals.
KREYDAWN and SUPPRESSORS:
Kreydawn are mindless slaves to the Dark. They are controlled by Suppressors—Dark servants with the Dreamer ability—and only do what their masters put into their minds. They are small lanky creatures with the features of emaciated, chalk-colored humans—aside from the stubby horns that run five in a row across their forehead. Suppressors are extremely tall and bone thin. They wear long dark cloaks with the cowl low to cover their strange faces—one large eye in the center of their face, no mouth, no nose.
DARSAPEAN and DAEMON:
Darsapean is the leader of the Dark. It is unknown whether he began as Hidden-kind or was spawned by Dark itself—he seemed to appear about the same time followers of Light began to be aware of the Dark. He is wicked and cunning. As brilliant as the Watchers and more deadly than the Lafar. He won over many with his charms in the beginning. Daemon—his highest captain and Demon Master—was one of his greatest achievements. Stolen from the followers of Light, Daemon’s genius is now used for the sole purpose of evil. Darsapean was captured and placed in Misery at the end of the Revolution, but Daemon escaped capture and has been biding his time in the Dark Realm awaiting his masters release—or plotting his escape.
If you’re looking for a fun book to read for information on elves and such, I enjoyed reading The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, and Other Little People, by Thomas Keightley,
